Readings for the 23rd, Sunday after Pentecost:
Ruth 1:1-18; Psalm 146; Hebrews 9:11-14; Mark 12:28-34
Summary of the Readings:
The introduction to the Book of Ruth, culminating in Ruth’s speech expressing her resolute commitment to remain with Naomi, serves as the First Testament story for this Sunday. In Psalm 146, the Lord is praised as both creator and sustainer. A thematic connection with the story from Ruth is the assurance that God watches over strangers and cares for widows and orphans. The Letter to the Hebrews continues the Christological mediation on Jesus as high priest, insisting on the effectual power of Christ’s sacrifice to purify our conscience. In our gospel story we hear Jesus’ teaching about the Great Commandment, we hear Jesus quoting the Shema and insisting that obedience is more important than sacrifice.

What does it mean to love God with all your heart, mind, and soul and to love your neighbours as yourself? What can you do to watch out for the oppressed, the widows, the orphans, or the people less fortunate?
