Welcome to our Worship Celebration for the Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost, Sunday, August 22nd, 2021 (Service of Holy Eucharist)
The Epiphany re-opened for in person worship today and we celebrated our first Eucharist together since Christmas Eve.
ALL ARE WELCOME HERE!
The Readings:
Joshua 24:1-2a, 14-18; Psalm 34:15-22; Ephesians 6:10-20; John 6:56-69
The First Testament story tells of the covenant made at Shechem, where Joshua enjoins Israel to leave behind their ancestral gods and serve the one God of ancient Israel. Israel then commits itself to faithful service. The concluding verses from Psalm 34 portray the Lord as a faithful ally of the righteous. Today’s Gospel story tells of Jesus presenting his disciples with a choice similar to that of the Joshua story. Sobering images dominate the teaching that is contained in the Letter to the Ephesians, as it encourages believers to arm for the cosmic battle against evil.
Questions for Reflection:
In the Gospel of John, Peter declares to Jesus, “You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God” (John 6:68-69). Are “believing” and “knowing” the same action? How does knowing something intensify our believing something?
