Readings for Advent 3: Zephaniah 3:14-20; Philippians 4:4-7; Isaiah 12: 2-6; Luke 3:7-18
Summary of the Readings: Zephaniah pictures a joyful Jerusalem, one that sees salvation on the horizon because God is in her midst. The responsorial psalm from Isaiah consists of songs of thanksgiving for God’s saving grace. In his letter to the ancient church in Philippi, Paul calls for his listeners to rejoice in the Lord, who is at hand. The apocalyptic dimensions of the Lord’s advent are stressed in the Gospel story, as it summarizes the preaching of John the Baptizer. The story ends with the joyful reassurance that John “proclaimed the good news to the people.”
Questions for Reflection: Imagine that you are in the crowd listening to John the Baptizer. You hear people in the crowd asking him, “What should I do to prepare?” How might John instruct you, your church, to prepare for the coming of God’s reign?
