THIS WEEK’S READINGS: Genesis 1:1-5; Psalm 29; Acts 19:1-7; Mark 1:4-11
If baptism is understood as a new beginning, then it is fitting that this portion of Genesis is our first reading. The image of the Spirit of God moving over the waters, God speaking and creating, and the references to the first day, remind us of the baptism of Jesus. Psalm 29, with its vivid portrayal of the union of natural storms with the voice and activity of God moves us closer to the story of Jesus’ baptism in Mark. Acts 19 raises the thorny issues of John’s baptism and the reasons why Jesus submitted himself to it.
