ALL ARE WELCOME HERE!
THE READINGS:
Proverbs 1:20-33; Psalm 19; James 3:1-12; Mark 8:27-38
In today’s First Testament passage from Proverbs we hear Wisdom prophesying in the
streets, scolding fools for their refusal to heed her advice. Apart from its view that the
heavens display God’s glory, Psalm 19 also extols the law of the Lord for, among other
things, making the simple wise. In the Gospel story, revelation and misunderstanding
occur side by side at Caesarea Philippi. The portion from the Letter James deals with
the sins of the tongue and exemplifies the power of graphic speech.
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION:
When we hear Jesus say we are to “deny” ourselves, this can seem like strangely
language, and that each of us is to know what that means in our own lives. You are
made in God’s image. As an image of the divine, God does not command you to be
nothing. You are not meant to be denigrated. What aspects of your life, your desires,
your tendencies, do you recognize as impeding your ability to set your mind on what
you truly want and need? What is your cross? Perhaps you see more than one cross
you must bear. If you “take up” your cross (or crosses), how might you live differently
than you do now?
If you wish to follow along with the order of service as you watch, you can do so by going to our website, www.epiphanysudbury.org, and scroll to the bottom of the page under Recent Announcements.
