The Readings: Amos 7:7-15; Psalm 85:8-13; Ephesians 1:3-14; Mark 6:14-29
The First Testament story for today tells of Amos’s vision of a plumb line, followed by his interchange with Amaziah in which he rehearses his humble origins. The selection from Psalm 85 appears to be a prophetic oracle offering the prospect of hope for all of God’s people. The Gospel story tells the vivid account of the death of John the Baptist. The story sketches the fate of John, who is the prophetic figure contemporary with Jesus and whom the church came to regard as an essential part of their story. The magnificent opening prayer of blessing is heard in the Letter to the Ephesians.
Questions for Reflection: To experience one’s self as God’s beloved is a gift beyond compare. For some, it is difficult to receive such a gift; for others, such grace comes more easily. How can we deepen our experience of that gift in ourselves? How might we encourage this gift in others?
