This Week’s Readings: Mark 11:1-11; Isaiah 50:4-9a; Psalm 31:9-16; Philippians 2:5-11; Mark 14:1-15:47
Today’s first story from Mark tells of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem and of his going into the temple. A portion of Isaiah’s third Servant Song serves as our First Testament passage. With its reassuring promise that God will vindicate the cause of the one who is unjustly treated, it sets an appropriate tone for this Sunday. A fitting complement is provided by Psalm 31, because it expresses the thoughts of the soul in distress, scorned by adversaries and broken by the conspiracies of one’s enemies. The classic portion from the Letter to the Philippians sketches the journey of the obedient Son from the heights of God’s presence to the depths of human despair. The Gospel story from Mark tells of Jesus’ betrayal, arrest, trial and crucifixion. With the disciples in mind, this account of the passion repeatedly recalls Jesus being abandoned by those who could have given him strength and support.
Questions for Reflection: The passion of Christ is a story of terror in which, against all odds, love wins. How might this story reshape your week, your life, our world? Where will you commit to letting love win? How will this change your life?
