Welcome to Worship for this Fourth Sunday of Advent, December 20, 2020.
The Advent season is a four-week period before Christmas that celebrates the anticipation and coming of Jesus Christ, the Messiah. The origin of “advent” is from the Latin word adventus which simply translates “coming” or “arrival”. Not only is the Christian meaning for preparation and celebration of the coming of Jesus Christ, his birth at Christmas.
We are happy you have joined us, whether you were able to join us in person or continue to join us virtually, YOU ARE WELCOME HERE!
Our readings for today are:
2 Samuel 7:1-11, 16; Psalm 89:1-4, 19-26; Romans 16:25-27; Luke 1:26-38
Today’s readings are, appropriately enough celebrative and full of praise. The story from Second Samuel tells of God’s covenant with the house of David, and Psalm 89, celebrates that covenant while calling on God not to forget. Luke’s story tells that God did not forget but remembers and sends Gabriel to tell Mary that through her God’s promise will be kept. Paul reflects on what that fulfilled promise of God means for Israel and for all the world and closes his Roman letter in a burst of praise.
