The Readings:
Job 38:1-11; Psalm 107:1-3, 23-32; 2 Corinthians 6:1-13; Mark 4:35-41
In today’s portion from Job, we hear the first part of the Lord’s speech to Job that includes a series of penetrating rhetorical questions that invite Job to probe the mystery of creation. The Lord’s holy governance over creation in all its fullness is praised in Psalm 107. The Gospel story from Mark tells of how Yahweh’s power to rule over chaotic creation is transferred to Jesus in the stilling of the storm. Presenting himself as a co-worker with God, Paul proclaims in his second letter to the ancient church in Corinth the acceptable day of salvation, and what it means to minister through various forms of human chaos and tribulation.
Questions for Reflection:
The story of Jesus stilling the storm in Mark tells of a time when the disciples were in great fear during a raging storm. Can you remember a time when you were in a frightening storm (literal or figurative) and felt in danger of being “swamped?” Did God feel far away or near to help you?
