The Readings:
Song of Solomon 2:8-13; Psalm 45:1-2, 6-9; James1:17-27; Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23
Images of springtime and young lovers liven the First Testament passage from the Song of Solomon. It is matched by the wedding images from Psalm 45, where the king is praised in lavish terms. We return to Mark’s Gospel story, where Jesus teaches moral uprightness as being the central demand of the law, while he also criticizes traditional interpretations that circumvent the law’s true purpose. The Letter of James encourages us to focus all of our attention on God who is the source of “every generous act of giving.”
Questions for Reflection:
“My beloved speaks and says to me, “Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away” (Song 2:10). Song of Solomon portrays a vivid picture of romantic love in poetic form. Can you recall an experience of romantic love? In what way does romantic love parallel our relationship with Christ, no matter whether we are male of female? In what ways is it different?
