Our readings for today are: Exodus 14:19-31; Psalm 114; Romans 14:1-12; Matthew 18:21-35
The Old Testament story from Exodus tells of the Hebrew crossing of the Red Sea to escape from Egyptian oppression and to begin their trek to the promised land. In lilting praise, Psalm 114 recalls Yahweh’s deliverance of Israel from Egypt. In Paul’s ancient letter to the Church in Rome he reminds us that like any other social group, religious communities include members who disagree and “quarrel over opinions.” Paul’s good advice is intended to help make Christian individuals less judgmental and more kind and loving toward one another. In the Gospel story from Matthew, we hear Jesus teach about forgiveness as he tells the well-known parable of the unforgiving servant.
