Welcome to Worship for this Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost, August 16, 2020. We are happy you have joined us once again.
Our readings for today are:Genesis 45:1-15, Psalm 133, Romans 11:1-2a, 29-32, Matthew 15:10-28
In Genesis we hear the conclusion of the story of Joseph, when he is reconciled with his family and they move to Egypt. In response to this moving story of family reconciliation, Psalm 133 appropriately proclaims the blessedness of families living together in love and harmony. In Paul’s letter to the church in Rome, we hear him continue to wrestle with the role of Israel in God’s plan for the growth and development of the ancient church; especially in regard to the inclusion of Gentiles within the people of God. The Gospel story tells of Jesus’ radical step of reconciliation with the Gentile enemies of Israel. Jesus’ action breaks the normal expectations of what Judeans do in relation to their enemies. Here, and with the Canaanite woman, Jesus is acting out his own teaching earlier in the Gospel by loving his enemy (Mt.43-48). He breaks the old law and responds to the woman from Canaan with compassion and mercy.
The order of service, including hymn texts, can be found below the service video.
