The Chancel is that part of of the church immediately between the altar now called the "Sanctuary", and the Nave. As churches were constructed with ample space for clergy and choir "westward" from the sanctuary, the word "chancel" was applied to this area as well, and is now normally employed for the entire area within the main body of the church "east" of the nave.
